Chavanga River Lodge

Chavanga is a wonderfully beautiful fly river that is surrounded by unspoilt nature. There are several hundred pools in a row and it is a pure pleasure to walk from one beautiful pool to the next. The river has a nice rise of Atlantic salmon with a rise in spring and autumn. Good periods in the spring are from the end of May to the end of June. The massive autumn rise starts in September to mid-October.

Chavanga is located south of Kola and flows out towards Lake Kvitsjøen. The river is about 50 km long and starts from a lake called Nizhnee Ondomozero. The fishing line that holds the most fish is about 17 km from Homepool in the lower parts of the river. When we fish Chavanga, we use both sides of the river based on conditions and our own wishes. In one week it is not possible to reach over all the beautiful pools that this river holds. But it becomes more like a luxury issue. There are fish in almost all pools and together with our experienced guides we select the best pools for you.

We recommend light salmon equipment for trips to Chavanga. Both one-handed rod and lightweight two-handed rod are good. Our favorite and recommendation is a lightweight two-handed rod from 12.4 feet to 14 feet. Floating line with the possibility of zinc tips covers most conditions. Floatline fishing with bombs is a combination that must be available as this can be very effective. One of the reasons for this is that the river is quite shallow and the fish has a short way to your fly even though it is in the lower part of the water masses. Shades of color in the river are brown to orange.

Chavanga lodge is located next to the Homepool just at the mouth of the river. It is only a few minutes walk from the lodge to the river. There is a bridge in the lower part that makes it easy to cross the river if desired. However, it is not difficult to cross the river as there are many ford points along the entire stretch. We also have a crawler tractor that can transport fishermen to the upper parts of the river if desired. In the lodge there are two nice bedrooms. Room 1 has 4 beds while room 2 has 3 beds. Bed linen is included and bed is made up every day. In the lodge we find a modern bathroom, toilet and shower together with a cozy living room with TV and Wifi. Lunch, lunch and dinner are served daily with drinks. Some days we have lunch out along the shore and then the guides heat a soup or similar together with bread, food and snacks. This works very well. There is a sauna in the yard of the lodge which is frequently used.

Kola River Lodge

The Kola River is a very exciting river that is surrounded by rugged nature even though the river flows out near the city of Murmansk. The river has a large rise of Atlantic salmon both spring, summer and autumn. Good periods in the spring are from the end of May to the end of June and some years a little into July. Kola River is world famous for its large salmon stock and here fly fishermen from all over the world flock to fight against the largest salmon on the Kola Peninsula.

Kola River is located close to the city of Murmansk and it is only about 40 minutes by car from the airport in Murmansk to our lodge.

We recommend solid salmon equipment for the trip to Kola as we hunt large salmon under solid conditions. Here, two-handed equipment applies. Both short models when we fish from a boat and more common 14.4 ft  to 15 ft rods when fishing from land. Liner will be like in Norway, a lot of flow with sinking point and large flies early in the season. Fill the spool with backing.

Our guides are well known in the river and the surrounding area and are even experienced fly fishermen. We also use a boat to get in the right position to get in touch with the salmon. This is especially important in some pools when the water flow is above medium high. The fishing in June is often a combination of land fishing and fishing from a boat, if you wish. It is of course optional.

Our lodge is only a few minutes walk from the river. Good food and great service await so we can focus on the actual fishing.

Additional information is coming. Feel free to contact us if you want to book for our next trip which is June 2020.

Strelna River Lodge

Strelna          Google MAP: 66.0692.80.38.656667.

The river Strelna is a magically beautiful and exciting river on the Kola Peninsula that originates from the Kejvy heights. Strelna flows out towards Kvitsjøen and is located in an area where few other people have been before. The salmon-bearing part of the river is about 160 km. This is untouched nature in the salmon kingdom. Last time we visited Strelna we had very good fishing experiences every single day during our stay. The pictures are from this trip which was in the autumn, October 2019.

Strelna is the fifth largest river on Kola. It is untouched and natural in every way. We are definitely in the realm of salmon and the catches can be fantastic. The season for Atlantic salmon in Strelna is from the end of May to around 15 June, this is the spring season. The autumn season, which is often the biggest upswing of the two, starts around September 20 to October 15. There is also a fine strain of sea trout, grayling and brown trout throughout the season.

Lodge in Strelna is a fly's throw from the Home pool which is again at the mouth of Strelna. The lodge has been upgraded for the 2020 season and contains nice cottages with all necessary equipment. Shower, sauna, toilet and large nice bedrooms. There is a common cabin where all the fishermen gather for breakfast, dinner and evening. Very nice and special wilderness profile that hits most fishermen in a good way. Really cozy lodge where you can hear the river roaring calmly when you are out on the porch. The food is home-made by local chefs who we are sure will inspire new dining experiences in the future. Bottled water, wine, beer and other beverages are available 24 hours a day. Same with snacks.

When we fish Strelna, we dispose of the entire river as desired. Both sides. It is a boat with a guide that transports the fishermen over to the other side, if desired. There is no bridge here, but the river is no deeper than you can cross in many places at low tide. The lower part of the river, Home pool, is affected by high and low tide. When it starts to go towards high tide we can see quantities of salmon appearing in periods. Here the river is about 80 meters wide and relatively shallow. There are very many fishing spots from both sides of the river in this area.

From the Home pool and upstream, the pools are in a row. Lots to fish and the current in the river is very exciting. The pools here are from small spots of about 5 meters to larger pools of about 100 meters. It is easy to walk along the river as there is solid ground under the waders most of the way.

We use both one-handed rods and two-handed rods in Strelna. On the smallest ponds, it is very exciting with a one-handed rod and floating line, bombs. While in other games a 14 foot with flow sink 3 or sink 5 tip is recommended. Many people use a 12.6 feet with float line and a light weighted tube fly, this can be very exciting and effective. The conditions of course determine what is an advantage to use from day to day. In any case, this is very exciting and fun salmon fishing in a river with good speed on the water without it being too demanding fishing. Really fun and we see a lot of salmon showing up in the ponds.

As mentioned, we have the whole river at our disposal and if you want to hike upstream for a day or two during your stay, we would recommend this. Here is a unique area that few have experienced. The salmon have not seen many flies here and the catches can be fantastic. If you take such a day trip, we will arrange it so that two fishermen go with a guide who will then bring food, drinks and other equipment for a really cozy wilderness lunch in the open air. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from the lodge to the upper part which is located above one of the waterfalls in the watercourse.

2instincts has a guide and tour guide on the trip to Strelna. You will not regret joining Strelna with us. There is hardly a better river and area to learn to fish for salmon with a fly. Perfect place to be also for those who have not landed salmon on a fly rod before.
